Why is my electric bill so high?

Start by separating a higher price from higher use. Then look for patterns before you buy equipment, approve a repair, or assume one appliance is the whole problem.

The short answer

A high electric bill is usually a pattern, not a diagnosis. A hotter or colder month, a rate-plan change, more people at home, a heating or cooling problem, electric water heating, an aging appliance, or air leaks can all contribute. Compare the bill with the same season last year before deciding what to fix.

If you smell burning, notice repeated breaker trips, hear equipment making unusual noises, see water where it should not be, or suspect a combustion or electrical issue, skip the checklist and contact an appropriately qualified local professional.

1. Read the bill before reading the house.

  • Save at least 12 months of electric bills, plus gas, fuel-oil, or water bills if the home uses them.
  • Write down the billing dates, total kWh used, total charge, rate-plan name, taxes and fixed charges.
  • Compare the latest bill with the same month last year, not only with the previous month.
  • Mark changes in household occupancy, work-from-home time, a new appliance, EV charging, a pool pump, medical equipment, or a long vacancy.

2. Separate price changes from use changes.

If kWh stayed near last year’s level but the total charge jumped, read the rate section and your utility’s notices first. A changed tariff, time-of-use peak charge, fixed fee, or tax can raise a bill without a new house problem.

If kWh rose sharply, ask what changed during that billing period: unusual temperatures, a thermostat setting, more cooling or heating hours, a guest, a new load, or equipment that ran longer than usual. This step prevents an expensive upgrade from being used to solve a billing-plan issue.

3. Check the largest likely loads in a sensible order.

Heating and cooling

In many homes, heating and cooling are the largest energy use. Check that supply and return vents are not blocked, replace filters according to the equipment instructions, and note rooms that are much warmer or colder than the thermostat setting. A dirty filter can restrict airflow; a technician should diagnose refrigerant, combustion, wiring, duct, or control faults.

Water heating and laundry

Electric water heating, long showers, a failing water-heater control, and frequent hot-water laundry can move the bill. Do not alter electrical connections or safety controls yourself. Check the manufacturer instructions and use a qualified professional where required.

Always-on and seasonal loads

Look for pool or spa pumps, dehumidifiers, portable heaters, window AC units, old refrigerators or freezers, server or gaming equipment, and EV charging. Record when each runs before deciding it is wasteful; some loads are necessary, and some problems are scheduling rather than replacement problems.

4. Look for house clues, not just appliance clues.

Drafts, attic or crawl-space gaps, disconnected or leaking ducts, and uneven room temperatures can make heating and cooling equipment run longer. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends starting with an energy evaluation to identify the measures that fit a specific building, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all upgrade list. Do not seal or insulate around combustion equipment, wiring, moisture damage, or ventilation openings without understanding the safety and code implications. 5. Decide the next step with evidence.

  • Rate or billing change: call the utility and ask about the tariff, meter read, billing period, and available rate options.
  • One new or always-on load: measure its schedule and usage where safe, then compare operating changes with replacement cost.
  • Comfort or equipment symptoms: document the room, time, thermostat setting, filter condition, and bill pattern before calling a professional.
  • Whole-home pattern: get an assessment or compare written scopes that address the house, not only a single piece of equipment.

Keep the bills, observations, photos, and any quotes in one place. They make it easier to compare like-for-like recommendations and to verify whether a completed project changed the pattern.
